{"id":25540,"date":"2019-01-10T14:15:35","date_gmt":"2019-01-10T14:15:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goldco.com\/?p=25540"},"modified":"2019-01-10T14:15:35","modified_gmt":"2019-01-10T14:15:35","slug":"bank-england-shocker-chinese-yuan-replace-us-dollar-world-reserve-currency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goldco.com\/bank-england-shocker-chinese-yuan-replace-us-dollar-world-reserve-currency\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese Yuan to Replace US Dollar as World Reserve Currency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve been <a href=\"https:\/\/goldco.com\/currency-risk-and-retirement-whither-the-dollar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">saying for years<\/a> that the US dollar will eventually be replaced as the world\u2019s reserve currency. But it\u2019s only now that world financial authorities are admitting the obvious.<\/p>\n<p>With the dollar having lost 85% of its value since the gold window was closed in 1971, it continues to lose purchasing power year after year as the Federal Reserve continues to create trillions of dollars worth of new money. While the Fed remains adamant that the dollar won\u2019t be supplanted, the Bank of England disagrees.<\/p>\n<p>Bank of England Governor Mark Carney was remarkably frank about the dollar\u2019s demise in a recent AMA-style forum on the Bank of England\u2019s website. In his view the dollar will eventually be supplanted by the Chinese yuan.<\/p>\n<p>Among the reasons Carney cited for his stance are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Emerging market economies (including China) make up 60% of the global economy;<\/li>\n<li>The US only has a 10% share of international trade;<\/li>\n<li>That lag between global trade and economic importance and reserve currency status will eventually be overcome.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Carney noted that even though the US overtook Britain in the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> century as the world\u2019s largest, it still took until the 1920s before the dollar became a dominant currency in international trade. With China nipping at the US economy\u2019s heels, it may only be a few years before China\u2019s economy surpasses the US in size. From there it\u2019s only a matter of time before the yuan completely replaces the dollar.<\/p>\n<p>With Russia, India, and other countries increasingly adopting the yuan in international trade, the dollar is being sidelined. That\u2019s bad news for American investors who hold dollar-denominated stocks and bonds. When the dollar loses its reserve status the value of those investments will plunge. Thankfully there\u2019s a way for investors to protect themselves once that happens: <a href=\"https:\/\/goldco.com\/gold-ira\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">investing in gold<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With the Bank of England now understanding that the dollar will be supplanted as the world\u2019s reserve currency, will the Fed step up and take responsibility or will it throw ordinary investors under the bus? Given the decreasing purchasing power of the dollar over the past 50 years and the dramatic increase in the value of gold, we\u2019ll bet on the latter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Will the yuan replace the dollar?
